4. Learned Standing Counsel would contend that mere pendency of criminal proceedings cannot be a ground to reject / refuse to issue or renew a passport, however, in such cases of pendency of criminal proceedings, the passport authorities n:new the passport either for one year, or for the duration specified by the concemr>d Court.

5. Havirg considered the respective contentions, the Crime No.214 of 2024 appears to rle under investigation by the police, as no charge sheet has been filed before the jurisdictional criminal Court. ln that view of the matter, the 3d respondent-passport authority is directed to renew the passport for a period of one year. lt is made clear that if the petitioner intends to travel abroad during the pendency of criminal proceedings, he shall file appropriate application before the jurisdictional criminal Court (if charge sheet is filed in Crime No.214 ot 2024 by such time), or this Court (if the charge sheet has not been filed by such time) seeking permission to travel abroad.
