ORDER

This Writ Petition has been filed to direct the respondents 1 and 2 to consider the petitioner’s request dated 23.06.2026 for granting an extension of one year for the compulsory rotatory internship beyond the nine year period and directing the respondents 3 to 6 to consider the petitioner’s representation dated 12.10.2026 to permit her to rejoin and complete BDS course.

2. The case of the petitioner is that she was admitted to the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) course at Saveetha Dental College, Chennai, in the year 2019, bearing Register No.151901064. She successfully completed the first and second years of the course without any arrears and has also authored ten research papers published in peer-reviewed journals. However, due to her mother's serious illness, namely Stage IIIA Carcinoma Endometrium, and the necessity to personally attend to her treatment and recovery, the petitioner was compelled to discontinue her studies. In June 2026, when she approached the 3rd respondent institution seeking permission to resume her studies, her request was rejected orally on the ground of the maximum permissible period for completion of the course. Thereafter, she submitted a detailed representation dated 12.10.2026 to the respondents, enclosing the relevant medical and

academic records, seeking permission to rejoin and complete the BDS course along with a one-time extension of one year to complete the compulsory rotatory internship. Since no orders have been passed on the said representation, the petitioner has filed the present Writ Petition.

3. The learned counsel for the petitioner submits that the petitioner had successfully completed the first and second years of the BDS course in her first attempt without any arrears and had also demonstrated her academic aptitude by authoring ten research papers published in peer-reviewed journals. However, due to her mother's serious and recurring illness, the petitioner, being the only child, was compelled to discontinue her studies and attend to her mother's medical treatment and recovery. The learned counsel further submits that the petitioner is still within the prescribed maximum period of nine years for completion of the BDS course, which expires only in 2028. The petitioner is not seeking any exemption from the prescribed academic, clinical, attendance, examination or internship requirements and is willing to fulfil all such requirements in accordance with the applicable regulations. It is further submitted that the petitioner's representation dated 12.10.2026, seeking permission to resume and complete the BDS course along with a one-time

extension of one year for completion of the compulsory rotatory internship, has not been considered by the respondents. Hence, the petitioner seeks a direction to the respondents to consider her representation on merits and permit her to resume and complete the course.

4. Heard Ms.T.Hemalatha, learned counsel for the petitioner and Mr.K.Thirukkumaran, CGC appearing for the respondents 1 and 2.

5. Without going into the merits of the claims made by the petitioner, this Court directs respondents 1 and 2 to consider the petitioner's representation dated 23.06.2026 and respondents 3 to 6 to consider the petitioner's representation dated 12.10.2026, and pass appropriate orders on merits and in accordance with the rules and regulations in force as on date, within a period of six weeks from the date of receipt of a copy of this order. It is made clear that the petitioner shall not be entitled to claim any special privilege or exemption from the applicable rules and regulations, and her request shall be considered strictly in accordance with the governing norms. This Court has not expressed any opinion on the merits of the petitioner's claim.
